TV Flicker

TVF-front

MOJO: “A shimmering Kraut-rail trip to Asgard.”

Louder Than War: “Astonishing… conducting Neu! on a ride to the far pop pavilions.”

Pale Blue Eyes are a young electro-modernist guitar group based in Devon’s rural hinterland in Britain’s southwest. Their horizon-wide pop and compelling rhythms <delete comma> take in hints of Neu!, The Cure and the Bunnymen’s Will Sergeant at his most raga-frenetic.

Following the release of their debut double A-side single Motionless/Chelsea in 2020, the trio have signed to Full Time Hobby and today continue their forward trajectory with the release of their new single TV Flicker. The single begins with an eerie, Joe Meek-esque fairground carousel. It’s a track that’s at once insistent and ominous – and, as with the Meek-produced 1961 UK number one Johnny Remember Me, is rooted in human mortality and its emotional after effects.

Drummer Lucy Board says of the song: “It does feel full of ghostly traces – feelings and recollections from the time of a sudden family bereavement, a snapshot into an anxiety-fuelled head-space and not being able to switch off your thoughts, blankly staring at the TV.”

Singer / guitarist Matt Board, meanwhile, reveals the track's dark, emotional underbelly: "At the time of my dad’s death I’d sometimes fall asleep in front of a flickering TV. It was calming to drift off to sound or background dialogue and it helped me sleep. The music and lyrics in TV Flicker also maybe conjure ambiguous images of 1970s Cold War décor – post-apocalyptic hideouts, a hatch leading into a lost nuclear bunker.”

Over the last year Pale Blue Eyes completed the construction of their own rural recording studio – Penquit Mill, set amid the greenery to the south of Dartmoor. Buzzards soared overhead as PBE recorded their forthcoming debut album, mixed by the great Dean Honer (The Moonlandingz, Róisín Murphy, I Monster, Human League, International Teachers of Pop) and due for release sometime in 2022.

PBE only started playing live relatively recently, cutting their teeth at Sea Change and Port Eliot festivals, as well as supporting Sea Power, W.H. Lung, Penelope Isles and Drahla. Next up is another W.H. Lung support slot and then, next March, a tour with Silverbacks.
